The Roman monetary system during most of the Roman Republic and the western half of the Roman Empire consisted of coins.

  • These coin included the following:
  • The Aureus made of gold.
  • The Denarius made of silver.
  • The Sestertius made of bronze.
  • The Dupondius made of bronze.
  • The AS made of copper.

These coinage denominations were used from around the middle of the third century BC until the late middle of the third century AD.

They were still accepted as payment in the Greek territories, even though these regions issued their own coinage and also some silver in other denominations, either called Greek Imperial or Roman provincials.

During the third century, the Denarius was replaced by the double Denarius, now usually known as the Antoninianus or the Radiate, which was then itself replaced during the monetary reform of Diocletian which created denominations such as the Argenteus made of silver and the Follis which was silvered bronze. After the reforms Roman monetary coinage consisted mostly of the gold Solidus and small bronze denominations. This trend continued until the end of the Empire in the West.
